5 top guitarists join forces to give Toronto an unforgettable night of shredding
Have you ever wished your guitar heroes could all be in the same place at once? Well, I did.
Generation Axe, a thunderous five guitarists in one performance, who performed at Massey Hall, Toronto, Ontario, on May 4, 2016, was unlike anything ever heard before. The collective tour featured Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde, Nuno Bettencourt, and Tosin Abasi, each with their own unique style of guitar playing. Even though each artist had their own iconic guitar sound, the audience was in awe when the five of them combined their powerful sounds, creating something extraordinary.
The incredible three and a half-hour performance left spectators mesmerised from the opening song, Edgar Winter’s “Frankenstein”. Their energy was palpable and contagious throughout the whole concert as they exchanged guitar riffs, shredding, and solos. Each one of them showcased their genre of guitar playing with individual sets full of intricate melodies and complex solos. Whether it was Vai’s melodic passages, Malmsteen’s neo-classical playing, Wylde’s rock riffs, Bettencourt’s way of tapping, or Abasi’s complex chord progressions, their cohesive guitar playing never ceased to blow the minds of the crowd. They played hits like ‘Tender Surrender’, ‘Black Star,” and ‘Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee’, encouraging eager audience members to sing along to their favorite tunes and air-guitar like pros.
The combined individual styles of each of the guitarists were unique. Every note was performed with precision and passion, making for an intense evening of hard rock.
