Yngwie Malmsteen @ The Rockpile, Toronto

Guitar God Yngwie Malmsteen wows fans in Toronto

Yngwie Malmsteen, the Swedish guitar virtuoso and Neo-classical metal legend, made his long-awaited return to Toronto last night, June 9, 2018, for a Master Class Guitar Clinic and a solo performance at the Rockpile. The heavy metal prog-rock god, is often credited as the father of “shredding,”

In case you’re not familiar with him, he is a shredder—a guitarist who plays extremely fast solos that often include shredding techniques like tapping and sweep picking. He also has a reputation for being the best shredder in rock music history (an opinion shared by many). His sound is Neo-classical metal and his technique is considered groundbreaking because he invented many new ideas on how to play guitar. He has been called “the father of shredding” for these reasons. However, although he was very influential on other musicians, he does not consider himself an innovator or pioneer when it comes to playing guitar because “all I did was take something from one place and put it in another.”

The Rockpile was full of fans decked out in their finest black leather outfits and teased hair. They were there to see their idol with no introduction needed: Yngwie Malmsteen is one of the biggest names in heavy music history.

Malmsteen played in front of a wall of Marshall’s. The show began with some Q and A with fans, followed by an epic 60-minute instrumental featuring amazing electric guitar playing highlighted by some tasty tapping on the neck and blistering solo’s that’s practically impossible not to want to shred along with when you hear it live.

He’s known as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and after last night’s display at the Rockpile, that status remains unchanged. His return to Toronto was a welcome one.
