Canadian metal visionary Devin Townsend has built a career around creating distinct sonic worlds—ranging from crushing heavy releases to atmospheric explorations and character-driven concept albums. His latest project, The Moth, represents something entirely different: an ambitious orchestral and theatrical work that has been more than a decade in the making.
Set for release on May 29, 2026, The Moth is a sprawling 24-track opus designed from the ground up as a large-scale production featuring orchestra, choir, and cinematic storytelling.
The idea for the album began over ten years ago as what Townsend describes as his potential “life’s work.” The concept gained real momentum about six years ago after an acoustic performance in Amsterdam, when the head of the North Netherlands Orchestra and Choir approached him with an invitation to bring orchestral grandeur to his catalogue.
Instead of revisiting older material, Townsend chose to channel those resources into something entirely new. That decision ultimately sparked the creation of The Moth, transforming a long-gestating idea into reality.
To coincide with the announcement, Townsend has released the album’s first single, “Enter The City.” The track arrives with a video created by Studio Sparks and offers the first glimpse into the album’s narrative world.
According to Townsend, the album tells “a loose story following someone who realizes that old patterns of behaviour are no longer serving them.” As the character confronts long-ignored internal conflicts, the story explores the emotional struggle of transformation and self-acceptance. “Enter The City” appears early in that journey.
A Three-Part Release
The Moth will be presented across three distinct components:
- The Moth – the main studio album
- The Moth – The Afterlife – a version highlighting the orchestral and choral arrangements
- The Moth – The War – a live recording of the musical’s debut performance in The Netherlands in March 2025
The project will be available in multiple formats, including a limited deluxe 3CD + Blu-ray artbook edition featuring the main album, The Afterlife, and the live recording The War. The Blu-ray includes the full live film along with Dolby Atmos and high-resolution stereo mixes.
Additional formats include a limited 2CD edition, standard CD jewel case, triple-gatefold 180g vinyl, and digital versions.

A Story of Transformation
At the heart of The Moth lies a central theme: true self-acceptance. Townsend uses the moth as a symbolic metaphor for transformation.
“The most obvious metaphor for change within the concept of this project was a moth,” Townsend explains. “From caterpillar to an entirely different creature—one so drawn to the light that it burns itself away. What remains is immutable—only the spirit.”
The album features contributions from a wide range of collaborators, including legendary guitarist Steve Vai and longtime Townsend collaborator Anneke van Giersbergen. Other contributors include Lynn Wu of OU, as well as Townsend’s longtime band members Darby Todd, Mike Keneally, and James Leach.
The project also involved orchestral arrangements by Joseph Stevenson and Niels Bye Nielsen alongside the North Netherlands Orchestra & Choir, as well as a large technical team responsible for mixing, mastering, and recording the massive production.
After more than a decade of development, The Moth stands as one of the most ambitious and personal works of Townsend’s career.
