Melodic Brilliance: Eric Johnson Wows Toronto Fans at The Rockpile

I still cannot get over the performance I saw from Grammy Award-winning guitarist Eric Johnson at The Rockpile Bar and Nightclub during his 2017 North American Tour. On the night of the event, I was lucky enough to be invited to the soundcheck before the show. I got to observe the meticulousness of his setup. He had two separate pedal boards for each amp, and his set list was scattered all over the stage on huge pieces of bristleboard. Even though sound check ran longer than normal, the doors opened on time.

Before Eric took the stage, the opening act who did an amazing job warming up the crowd was Arielle, a singer-songwriter from Austin, Texas, who later joined Eric on stage to play Nothing Can Keep Me From You and Present Time during his set. For me, this was actually my first time seeing Eric Johnson live. Most of the people in the bar seemed to be longtime fans of Eric Johnson, and they roared with enthusiasm when he started his set.

His performance was so powerful and mesmerizing—the songs flowed so naturally from his fingertips. His set consisted of a wide variety of songs, from old favorites to new releases. It was incredible to see and hear such incredible taste and class from the mind and fingers of the six-string maestro. The crowd was so enthusiastic throughout the show, and at the end, we begged for an encore. He obliged us with Chase the Sun and Zap.

To me, this was a truly remarkable show that I will never forget. The experience of seeing Eric Johnson perform live was phenomenal, and I am so happy I was able to take part in it. If you are a fan of guitar, I highly recommend catching one of Eric Johnson’s live shows. It is an experience you will never forget!
