Massey Hall welcomed the Swedish heavy metal gods Opeth on October 5th, 2016 for their first ever visit to the historic venue. This visit was part of their tour in support of the new album release, Sorceress. The band, led by frontman and vocalist Mikael Akerfeldt, put on a mesmerizing performance for the sold-out crowd.
It was a night of firsts, as I had never seen Opeth perform and they had never played the venue before. Special guests The Sword, a heavy metal band from Austin, Texas, opened up the show and immediately set the tone for a night filled with deep, progressive metal goodness. From there, Opeth launched into a setlist filled with both old and new material, played in front of an enraptured audience. Even with the energy levels skyrocketing, Opeth never lost an ounce of control, always staying on point and keeping the momentum going.
Mikael Akerfeldt truly captivated the audience throughout the evening, delivering powerful, emotionally charged lyrics and taking the time to make small talk with the audience between songs. He even went as far as to mention that KISS were the first metal band to play the Massey Hall stage back in 1975.
The show concluded with an encore featuring a fan-favorite from their album Deliverance , before bowing out to a massive applause from the Toronto crowd.
All in all, Opeth was absolutely sensational at Massey Hall. With the combination of new and old material, passionate musical delivery and heartfelt stage presence, they put on a truly special show and, in the process, furthered their legacy as one of Sweden’s premier metal bands.
