This past weekend I had the privilege of seeing a concert at The Rockpile in Toronto. The show was put on by Phil X after being inducted into Mississauga’s Music Walk of Fame. Phil shared the stage with Kojo Ferguson and Dale Harrison! The venue itself is small; it’s more like a large living room than anything else! But what it lacks in size, it makes up for with talent.
This was my first time seeing Phil X live solo, and I really enjoyed the show. He is a great musician who can play the guitar amazingly well, sing beautifully and has great comic timing.
The show started with Phil introducing himself as “Phil X – The World’s Best Guitarist”. He then went on to explain how his name came from his love for Jimi Hendrix, but also because of his love for philosophy (the -x ending). In fact he has an entire book called ‘Philosophy Through Music’ which is somewhat based on Nietzsche’s idea that art should be a reflection of life itself rather than just simply beautiful or technically impressive workmanship like much of classical music is today (this was another reason why I enjoyed this show so much).
All in all, the concert was a blast. The band sounded great and the crowd had a good time. I hope that they do more shows in the future!
The Setlist is down below and don’t forget to leave a comment 🙂
