Villagers of Ioannina City Announce New Album Venceremos, Share “Ghosts in the Sky” Video

Greek heavy rock outfit Villagers of Ioannina City are back, and they’re not easing back in quietly. The band has announced their new studio album, Venceremos, due out September 18 via Napalm Records, alongside the release of the first single and video, “Ghosts in the Sky.”

It’s the band’s most expansive work yet, built around a concept that follows people fighting their way out of a controlled, fear-driven world toward something closer to freedom. No gods, no kings, just the long climb toward meaning on your own terms. It’s heavy material, and the band leans into it.

“Ghosts in the Sky” runs 7 minutes and 40 seconds, plenty of room for the band to build out the layered, ritualistic sound they’ve become known for. Guitars do most of the heavy lifting early, but it’s the bass and the traditional instrumentation, bagpipes and zourna woven through the heavier passages, that give the track its distinct pulse. There’s a psychedelic haze to parts of it too, less a detour from the band’s sound than a deepening of it.

The lyrics lean into themes of solidarity and defiance, people holding the line for each other when giving up would be easier, and refusing to let go of hope even when everyone around them says it’s pointless. It’s earnest without tipping into corny, which isn’t easy to pull off.

“It is a call to stand together in the face of fear, where hope travels like a distant star and freedom is worth every fight,” the band said of the track. “It’s about defiance, unity, and believing in change, even when everybody says it won’t come.”

Fans, for their part, are thrilled to have them back. Comments on the video ranged from the simple (“WE ARE SO FUCKING BACK”) to the more measured praise of listeners noting the shift in direction from 2023’s Age of Aquarius. A few longtime followers flagged the heavier, more metal-leaning approach as a departure, with one commenter calling it “a nice song” while hoping the folk elements show up stronger elsewhere on the record. Others were simply happy to see the band’s name back in their feed after a long wait between releases.

Venceremos was produced and recorded by Alex Karametis at Magnanimous X Studio in Greece, with mixing and mastering handled by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios. The band recorded as a four-piece: Karametis on vocals, guitars and synths, Akis Zois on bass, Aris Giannopoulos on drums, and Dimitris Brentas on winds.

The album will be available on CD digipack, multiple vinyl variants including limited regional pressings, and digital formats, with a webstore test pressing capped at just 50 copies.

Villagers of Ioannina City will celebrate the release with a show at Athens’ Lycabettus Theatre on September 20, followed by dates across Greece and a European tour set for March 2027, with specific dates still to be announced.

Pre-orders for Venceremos are available now, and “Ghosts in the Sky” is streaming everywhere.
